£45,000 pledged to Brighton community energy scheme

Many other solar coops exist nationwide. Leominster Community Solar installed this 49kW solar array in November 2011

Hi folks,

I’m very pleased to say that £45,000 has been pledged for our community-owned renewable energy scheme so far. It’s a fantastic response – many thanks to those of you who’ve been in touch.

Pledgees range far and wide – from a 26-year-old website designer to a retiree who used to work on offshore gas rigs. Most are from Brighton – one of the fascinating things about BEC has been the diversity of local support. You can add your support by pledging here.

We’re also in the running for a further 50k loan from the PURE/ BRE Community Energy fund – this would mean that we have nearly half our 200k target covered.

We launch our solar scheme on 7.45 this Wednesday, 16th May at the Friend’s Meeting House. Both Caroline Lucas and Jason Kitkat, leader of Brighton and Hove Council, will say a few words – the BEC directors and I will also explain how BEC has evolved, and answer your questions. We will also have free tea and cakes on hand if you’d like to stay around for a chat.

If you can’t make it on the night then our investment invitation will be on our website from early Thursday morning – this goes gives and in-depth analysis of what our share offer entails.

Running BEC has been a long project – and one not without difficulty. The FIT changes in early December were a heavy blow – but recent falls in the price of solar mean we are once again ready to realise the ambition of community-owned renewables in Brighton and Hove.

I hope to see you on Wednesday.

Best

FIT revives as solar prices plummet

A dramatic fall in the price of solar has meant solar schemes are once again viable – even with the severe cuts in the Feed in Tariff.

Over the last six months the price of solar has fallen steeply – in some cases by up to 70%. The falls in solar prices are due to a combination of two factors:

1/ Equipment costs tumble
The cost of silicon has been falling rapidly over the last year or so. Large silicon makers in China have been expanding rapidly, with expectations that capacity will nearly double by 2015.

Manufacturers are investing hugely in silicon-making factories: Daqo, Woongjin (China) and Hemlock (US)  have added tens of thousands of tons of capacity this year. The spot price of silicon is less then half that of early 2011.

The same phenomena can be seen with solar panels. Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s solar module price index stands at $1.03 (62p) per watt , a 45 percent price drop since March 2011. Global manufacturing capacity is running far ahead of demand.

2/ UK solar market tanks – leading to cutthroat pricing

At the same time, UK installation numbers are down dramatically. Installers have consequently been forced to reduce their margins.

As the chart below shows, UK installation numbers have been see-sawing – usually peaking as FIT deadlines approach. Yet since FIT changes at the beginning of April, installation has been at its slowest pace since March 2011.

Consequently solar installers are under pressure. Research suggests that as many as 25% of the industry has been laid off, with 43% of solar companies reporting they will make redundancies in “coming months”. 93% of companies reported business as “very slow” at present.

While this is a dismal picture for the industry, it means people currently commissioning systems, such as Brighton Energy Coop, are able to attract good prices for their installations. In fact, now is a great time to be commissioning solar systems such as our project to install panels at Shoreham Port, City Coast Church and St George’s Church in the Brighton area.

Conclusion

When the FIT was cut in half in November 2011, few predicted the tectonic shifts that have taken place in the industry, both positive and negative.

At the same time as panel prices fell through the floor, FIT cuts meant the UK solar industry also suffered a dramatic reduction in business, leading to steep declines in installer margins.

The effect of these new prices mean that a window of opportunity exists for developers, during which time solar once again stacks up as a business model.

At least until the next FIT cut, on July 1, at which time everything gets thrown into the air again. We shall see how things settle.

Free home energy surveys now in Hove, Hangleton – and more

Hi everyone,

I’m pleased to say that we have extended our home energy survey scheme to new areas of our city.

So: if you’re in Hove, Hangleton, Southwick, Aldrington, or West Blatchington you can now have your home’s energy efficiency surveyed – for free!

These surveys normally cost £395 – if you’d like to find out more then do visit the Green Building Partnership web page, or give them a shout on here or on 01273 961272.

BEC’s home efficiency programme is part of a wider initiative – the Brighton LEAF programe.

Many people are doing good stuff around LEAF – the Low Carbon Trust, for example, are conducting a survey of people’s energy bills, building a historical picture of Brighton’s energy consumption.

Meanwhile Brighton Peace and Environment Centre are in the process of putting together a self assessment pack, allowing people to investigate what measures they could put in place themselves.

Elsewhere Brighton 10:10 ran two successful events this weekend, equipping residents with energy efficiency metres, draft excluders and other energy efficiency kit. If you’re in Hollingdean then you can still get your home efficiency survey via 10:10 – see the Green Building Partnership.

The LEAF partners have also been creating job opportunities. The Low Carbon Trust have trained two new people to support LEAF activities, and the Green Building Partnership have trained up nine new assessors, most of which are young people, including one previously unemployed young mother.

These new skills will prove invaluable when a major government incentive comes into effect later this year. The Green Deal is a big push to promote home efficiency and we expect to see a quantum leap in areas such as efficiency surveys on the back of that.

Enough for now – I will let you know how things progress.

Cheers

Will

100 homes surveyed – and counting!

100 homes surveyed – and counting!

Hi Folks,

Just to let you know that – together with our partners – we’ve now advised more than a hundred homeowners how to make their homes warmer and cheaper to run. The enthusiasm for our free home efficiency surveys has been really fantastic to witness.

We’ve a few left within the budget – so if you live in Portslade or Hollingdean then do get in contact with the Green Buliding Partnership here.

Meanwhile, I thought you might like to know that Brighton 10:10 is giving away thousands of pounds worth of energy saving equipment and advice at two free events tomorrow (Saturday 10th March).

Using local suppliers 10:10 have put the equipment into some rather cool energy-saving packs, including energy monitors, radiator boosters, secondary glazing and loads more. All in all these packs are worth more than £100.

Finally, 10:10 have also produced a really useful guide to saving energy in your home (see right). Full of tips and tricks, you can download it here.

Hope you are well

Free home efficiency surveys

Hi Folks,

I’m very pleased to say that we recently received a grant of £30k via the government’s LEAF fund for work on energy efficiency around Brighton and Hove. Working with the Low Carbon Trust, the Green Building Partnership, Brighton & Hove 10:10 & the Brighton Peace and Environment Centre we’re offering FREE Home Efficiency surveys (worth 400 quid) to householders living in Hollingdean, Hannover or Portslade.

This surveys are intended to assess how to make your home cheaper and more comfortable to run. You’ll can benefit from a personalised report that details how to make your home more energy efficient. We look at the simple measures you can take – such as draught-proofing and wall insulation – and show you what cost-effective options could meet your needs.

There’s no catch: the Home Efficiency Survey will be yours to keep and follow up if, when and how you decide.

If you’re interested in the above, have a look at our delivery partners – the Green Building Partnership, contact them here – or give them a shout on 01273 961272.

Keep an eye out for other LEAF activities over the next month or so. Highlights include free DIY energy efficiency packs, energy efficiency info sheets, buying clubs – and a lot more. I’ll keep you posted.

Meanwhile as many of you will know we continue to wait for clarity around the feed in tariff. The government is currently deciding whether to take the issue to the supreme court, and thinking around the proposed community FIT tariff has not yet materialised.

Without clarity on FITs we feel that we must continue to wait before launching our pioneering solar project.

Frustrating, but we have some ideas as to how to proceed with or without FITs – I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, do take advantage of the free home survey – it’s a great opportunity to see how your house is doing!

Best
