Our vision

There are increasing concerns about the planet’s changing climate and rising carbon dioxide emissions. One sector that could do more to reduce environmental impacts is energy generation. According to Department of Energy and Climate Change figures, an estimated 39% of carbon dioxide emissions were from the energy supply sector and 17% from residential fossil fuel use (from heating, cooking and lighting) in 2010.

At Brighton Energy Cooperative, we believe that energy co-ops are powerful vehicles for engaging local communities on energy issues. Community-owned energy gives local people ownership of energy generation, makes those who receive the green energy less vulnerable to energy price increases, and empowers communities to improve their local environments.

We believe grassroots action on climate change is an important driver for the fundamental changes we need. Our membership helps deliver a cleaner, greener city, and is part of a national movement that’s seeing communities across the country adopt similar models (see Other energy co-ops).
